Now In the Music Industry
In 1967, Rod was invited by Yardbirds guitarist Jeff Beck to join him as the vocalist for the Jeff Beck Group.
Initially - and despite their talent - the band weren’t very successful. They were very nearly broke in 1968 when they were booked for a six-week American tour however, and their fortunes changed. This was to be their making, with crowds giving them standing ovations, and critics praising the combination of Beck’s incredible guitar playing with Rod’s coarse vocal style.
During his time with the group, Rod also continued trying to develop his solo career; he did eventually sign a solo contract with Mercury records in 1968, however wasn’t able to release material until the middle of 1969 due to contractual complexities.
Around this time, guitarist Steve Marriot left a band called the Small Faces; this left a gap which Ronnie Wood filled. Wood and Stewart had been close friends since meeting in a pub in 1964, and Ronnie convinced Rod to join the band as well. The new group decided to ‘re-brand’ as The Faces.
Over the next couple of years, Rod released both a solo album and one as a member of The Faces. His band found great success as a live act, and Rod was starting to firmly establish himself as a respected performer.
Rod’s solo career gradually began to overtake the success he was having with the Faces; this was strongly fuelled by the widespread success of one of his best-known singles Maggie May. In 1972 the gap in parity caused serious tension in the band.
They soldiered on for another three years however, but after twice touring the US in 1975 things became too much and the band split.
Later that year, Rod moved to the US, and signed for a new record company. It was here that he recorded and released Sailing, the first single from his album Atlantic Crossing (and a cover of a Sutherland Brothers song). The song hit number one in the UK, and - after being featured a year later as the theme tune for a documentary series about the HMS Ark Royal - returned to the top ten. Because of this double chart success, the song is today still Rod’s best-seller.
Rod’s US Success continued with the release of Tonight’s The Night, which topped the Billboard chart for an incredible eight weeks. The success of this song drove the sales of the album it came from - A Night on the Town - which led to it being Rod’s first platinum release.
Through the remaining years of the decade, and into the first couple of years of the 80s, Rod enjoyed success matched by very few artists; his work was both critically acclaimed (with the notable exception of Da Ya Think I’m Sexy ) and popular with his fans. Rod developed a unique style which seemed to be a heady mix of folk, soul, rock & roll and rhythm and blues.
